Search for Vice President for Information Technology launched

Thursday, February 16, 2017

Fellow Members of the University Community,

I write to announce the launch of a search for the University’s next Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (VP/CIO.)  This position serves as a key member of the Finance and Operations leadership team, with systemwide responsibility for all aspects of providing IT services that are responsive and service-oriented.  It is my philosophy that a world-class University should expect nothing less than world-class support services.  I also believe that the institution is best served by open, transparent search processes for its leadership positions.  To that end, I have appointed a search committee with broad representation from across the University and I thank the following individuals who have agreed to serve on this committee:

  • Wendy Lougee, University Librarian and McKnight Presidential Professor (co-chair)
  • Michael Volna, Associate Vice President for Finance (co-chair)
  • Kemal Badur, Senior Director for Infrastructure and Production, Information Technology
  • Al Beitz, Professor, College of Veterinary Medicine and Director, Center for Educational Innovation
  • Sehoya Cotner, Associate Professor, Department of Biology Teaching and Learning
  • Elizabeth Eull, Chief of Staff, Finance and Operations
  • Geoffrey Ghose, Associate Professor, Departments of Neuroscience, Radiology, and Psychology and Chair, Senate Committee on Information Technology
  • Sam Marlow, Minnesota Student Association Vice President
  • Barbara Smith, Manager of Application Development and Academic Technology Support, Academic Health Center
  • Jeff Sperling, Director of Technology Support Services, Crookston
  • Karen Swoverland, Director of Information Technology, College of Continuing Education

We aim to develop a rich and diverse candidate pool and we seek your assistance in bringing this opportunity to the attention of well-qualified individuals here and at other universities and organizations across the country. We invite you to submit nominations and applications. I expect the committee will begin reviewing candidates by early April with finalists visiting campus in May. Confidential inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted electronically to:

Laura Vallone, Witt/Kieffer

Paige Rohman from University Services will staff the committee with support from our search firm Witt/Kieffer.   If you have questions, or would like more information about the position, search process, or application or nomination procedures, please feel free to contact Paige at

Whether our next VP/CIO is across campus, across town, or across the country, I am confident this search team will do their best work to recommend a leader who is the right match for the U.  You can expect regular updates from me as the search progresses, including opportunities to hear from and provide feedback on finalists.  For the most up to date information, please visit
